The Offspring of the Moon

John W Sexton
The Early Risers  Six hedgehogs the size of commercial vans lay dozing on the lawn, their snouts blowing six tempests of ripe breath at the washing. The dew-sodden towels billowed on the lines of the swivel-rail, turned like 'copter vanes until the entire lawn and the creaking garden shed, the six hedgehogs (still sleeping), our neighbour's house, the hen-house and the hens, our house and the garden pond (with two bass) rose up into the sky, dropping down worms, clods of earth, sunken pennies, clothes-peg springs, all kinds of stuff that had sunk through the grass, and took us up above the highest storms, the plum-purple sky, on rotating wings.
