What It's All For

Hour by hour the contours of the beach can shift,
something that seems as solid as a dune
is not. Nothing permanent, then, is that it?
Maybe the search for a point is what it's all about.
The waves so terrifying, the crystal blue of the sky,
the wind combing the dune grasses — maybe that's the why.
Happiness, in spite of it all: the agony, the wondering, and the doubt.
The sand is hot beneath my feet,
that's what it's all about, the feel of hot sand
as I wander dreamily back towards my car. Happiness
has meaning, the path meandering over the hill
through the ice plant to the asphalt
of the parking lot — joy, delight. It always has, always will.
